Chapter 4

Kate

This restaurant is fancy.

We’re escorted to our table, the in-house violinist playing on the stage to the right of the seating area, and Tanner pulls my seat out for me like the gentleman he is.

Taking a moment, I admire Tanner as he moves around the table to his seat. He is so handsome this evening, looking delicious in his fitted black suit. I vow to make it a mission to get this man into more suits.

Tanner is a contractor and more often than not, wears jeans with some sort-of flannel and a hard hat. I enjoy admiring him in his everyday clothes too, but dressing up every once in a while would be nice. He’s got a great body, muscles toned from job sites, and his skin has a golden glow from working in the sun.

His hazel eyes meet mine across the table, a nervous smile splaying across his face. I’m sure he is feeling a bit out of his element. This place is insanely fancy, and I even feel out of place.

“Thank you for bringing me here. It’s lovely.” Reaching across the table, I grab his hand, squeezing it reassuringly.

“You deserve the world, you know that?” He squeezes my hand in return, rubbing his thumb across my knuckles before placing a delicate kiss on the back of my hand.

Butterflies take flight in my stomach at his words. How did I find him?

Tanner has these incredibly romantic moments that come so naturally to him. I count myself lucky in more ways than one that this man is mine. How can I hear him say these things and not fall for him? He’s the literal man of my dreams.

The waiter, dressed in pressed black slacks, and a white button-up shirt, complete with a pristine white apron appears at our table, wine bottle in hand, and pours wine into our glasses.

One of the first things I noticed upon entering the restaurant, is that there is no menu. Every night, the kitchen prepares a new serving menu for the guests. This will be a five-course meal, served with wine selected by a sommelier specifically for each course. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but I look forward to tasting every one set before me.

Each course is presented by servers wearing white gloves, all simultaneously placing the dishes in front of us. The food is amazing, and Tanner and I dig into our food with enthusiasm.

Our main course is set before us, and my mouth waters. The roasted duck is glistening from the orange glaze coating it. Picking up my fork and knife, I slice off a small bite and bring it to my mouth. I’ve never had duck before but based on the way I moan the minute it hits my tongue makes me think that it needs to become a staple in my life.

Tanner chuckles at me from across the table, shaking his head at my outburst. “Now where have I heard that sound before…?”

“Oh, be quiet. It’s delicious and you know it.
